CHINA AND I
Andrew H. Lee

I was born and raised in colonial Hong Kong as an orphan of mother China. Until I went abroad to the United States to further my university education, I eventually found my close accord with China and started to play a role to bridge the US and China.

As a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, I organized several first-of-its kind cultural performances to the US public. I produced symphonic concerts introducing for the first time the ¡°Butterfly Lovers¡± Violin Concerto and ¡°Yellow River¡± Piano Concerto to the US audience. Before I graduated, I also produced the US debut of the Chinese Musical ¡°Liu Sanje¡± at MIT.

I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area upon my graduation and started my career as an engineer. Once I got settled in the Bay Area, I continued my quest as an Impresario. I founded the Asian Performance Arts and produced the East Meets West Symphonic Concert series performing at the Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. Again, these concert series featured many of the first-its-kind sold-out only performances. Among which were the San Francisco Opera Chorus and Orchestra featuring for the US debut of the ¡°Yellow River Cantata¡± sung by a premier US professional group in Chinese. The concert series also featured top conductors, instrumentalists and vocalists in unique programs blending the East and the West. Guest artists include the late San Francisco Opera Director Kurt Adler, the late China Central Philharmonic Music Director Li Delun, China Central Philharmonic Director Emeritus Yan Liangqun, China¡¯s premier Pipa Soloist Liu Dehai, and many world renowned instrumentalists and vocalists. Not only did we bring top caliber performances to bridge the US and China, we also successfully brought the Chinese community to mainstream venues and social activities in the western world.

In addition to the performances, I was also active in the community promoting the cross-cultural exchanges as well as cross-national friendship. In 1997, I led a steering committee in San Francisco in organizing the celebration of Hong Kong¡¯s reunification with China.

In 2001, I moved to Shanghai and helped a US company to start up an operation in China. My family joined me two years later and we are happily settled in Shanghai. We are excited about the continuous growth in China and enjoy every moment of our stay as expatriates in China. As the General Manager of a US High Tech company, I treasure the opportunity to learn and share with our team, and cross-promote the values between the East and the West. Even though we are expatriates in China, we are proud to have our Chinese roots, sharing the same heritage.

Together, we share ¡°One World, One Dream¡±.
