Hello All,
My name is Sandra. I'm a 45 year old Canadian ecologist. I have been living and working in Central Europe and Turkey. For the last several years I have been increasingly attracted to the work of Chinese ecologists who are working on designing sustainable cities and managing the landscape for a more enviornmentally friendly future. As I read I became more and more interested in their ideas and their methods. I really wanted to come to China and meet with the teachers and students here. Although, I didn't have any luck finding work in my field while still abroad, I decided not to give up without some real effort. So, I succeeded in finding a position as an teacher of English as a foreign language, sold everything I owned, and moved to Wuhan.
I've been here for exactly one month. I think it might very well be the best decision I've made in my life.
I've visited, lived in, and worked in several countries and never have I met with such warmth and hospitality as I have here. The students are so keen and hard-working, industrious really. It's an inspiration that makes me work even harder. One thing I really like is the respect for education and the genuine belief that true effort is its own reward.
And, people in daily life are so open and helpful. A week ago on my morning walk I met a Chinese woman practicing yoga. Using nothing but body language I asked her if she wouldn't mind my following her actions. She didn't. Every morning since she has welcomed me to her yoga "class". I felt so overwhelmed that she would interrupt her own practice to correct my beginner's stance and to help me. I'm so amazed by the good will that is generated. yesterday, I participated in the 58th anniversay of the founding of the people's Republic of China at a reception hosted by the Govenor of Hubei province. Ten outstanding foreign experts were recognized for the contribution they have made in the past year to Hubei province. What an incredible gesture of sharing.
I know I'm squeaking in under the midnight deadline, so I won't have any votes, but the opportunity to apply couldn't be allowed to pass. The Chinese people want to honour foreigners by recognizing the contribution they make to the country. As a foreigner, and a newly arrived one at that, I would like to show my respect and gratitude for the open embracing spirit that the Chinese have shown me, and will no doubt soon show the world.
Good luck to everyone!
Sandra
