China and IMy name is Michelle. My father (Jaime FlorCruz 吉米) says my name was inspired by the Beatle’s song “Michelle”. My Chinese name is Meixia 美霞. That's because I was born as a beautiful dawn was breaking. I was "Made in China", born in the Philippines, and bred in Beijing. I guess that makes me a top-quality product, a fusion of different cultures. I'm turning 17 soon and am very much at home here. I am keenly learning Mandarin, Chinese history and culture. I'm now a senior in high school at the International School of Beijing, where over 1,000 students are enrolled from different parts of the world. In school I play rugby and softball. Recently, I had the chance of meeting Olympians like US swimmer Michael Phelps and Australia's hockey team captain Matthew Wells (see my photo with him in front of the Bird's Nest). It was neat to see them in Beijing. Like my father, I've shared the joys and pains with the residents of Beijing. When the SARS epidemic hit the Chinese capital in 2003, our family chose to stay and stick it out with Beijing. As a token of support, I donated a modest amount of my monthly allowance to help the doctors and nurses in the frontline of fighting SARS. No big deal, really. Just trying to help cheer up people. Go Beijing ! My father and I both wish to be one of the torch-bearers. We're really glad that Beijing will soon host the Summer Olympics. We are happy for Beijing. We'd be thrilled if we could join the relay and carry the Olympic torch in the city we call our “home".
